Shiver me timbers!
Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew visited Meridian on Wednesday 6th October after receiving a letter from Bea in Yr 5 asking for his help in supporting a mutiny against the teachers.
Our surprise assembly did not only take us by storm, but it spread around the world; Meridian went global as news of Captain Sparrow’s visit to school was taken up by the international media. Over a 4-day period, our website received over 16,000 hits and we were sent messages from as far away as Germany, Sweden, USA, Canada and Australia.
Our small school office was buzzing and we were overwhelmed by the amount of media enquiries. Staff and children all did a fantastic job in dealing with our new found fame and Bea, her classmates, and the school council took the TV and radio interviews in their stride. Well done to all. What a fantastic example of what determination and self-belief can lead to and we're sure the teachers couldn’t have wished for a more ‘real’ speaking and listening opportunity for their classes!
We doubt there will ever be another week quite like it but the legacy remains. Thank you to Captain Jack and his crew for taking the time to create such a memorable day for all the children to treasure; and for inspiring wonderful creative writing in every classroom. Our thank you letters will be winging their way to our visitor very soon.
We hope to share some of our Pirating experiences in the next edition of our very own school newspaper – The Laser.
Watch this space me hearties!
