The View from the Pool - by Dave Davis

Here's how we managed to secure our Small Schools’ trophy at the 2013 Primary Schools Gala

Lulu and Kai put in good performances in the Butterfly, before Katelyn jumped in to win the Year 4 breaststroke. Ally picked up 3 points in the boys breaststroke and Rosie picked up a point for us in the backstroke.

Lulu swam a cracking race to finish 2nd in the Year 5 freestyle – missing out on first place by just 0.12 of a second! Sydney earned us 5 points in the Yr 6 freestyle, and Kai gained another 4 points in the same event for the boys. The Year 5 breaststrokers were terrific. Miriam and Ryan both swam brilliantly to come 2nd in their races.

The rules allow swimmers in Year 4 to swim up in a Year 5 or Year 6 race. It shows how well Katelyn and Ally swam when they both picked up another 4 points EACH for the team in the Year 6 breaststroke – swimming TWO years above their age group.

Last year, the Meridian girls won the medley relay, and this year the team of Sydney, Miriam, Katelyn and Lulu came SO close to retaining their title. They put in a fine performance, which ended with Lulu getting closer and closer to her rival in the final length, but the team finally came 2nd – losing by less than 1 second.

The boys medley relay team – Abel, Ryan, Kai and Ally earned us 8 points, and the girls freestyle team – Myrtille, Sasha, Giulia and Katie, who’d already done brilliantly to reach the final, earned us another valuable 4 points.

Well done to all those who took part – including those who swam in the semi-finals. It was a fantastic team effort.

Congratulations everyone and A BIG Thank You
to all the adults involved, especially Kim, Bernie and Dave Davis—for helping to get the team into winning shape!
